Decisions of a Senior Citizen
1. I DECIDE to become the meekest woman on earth like the 80 year old Moses. Though irritated by sons, daughters, sons-in-law or daughters-in-law I will hold my peace. I will not lose patience with my neighbours, neighbourhood children or servants attending to me. I will consider this decade of dependency as a discipline of humility from God and not hesitate to stoop down to ask for help.
2. I DECIDE like Naomi the widowed mother-in-law of Ruth not to let loneliness and sorrow depress me. I will treat my daughters-in-law and sons-in-law like my own children and win their love. I will seek their good. I will learn to live with my children peacefully, and adapt myself to their lifestyle. I will not be dependent on my son for emotional satisfaction but understand that he now has his own family. I will not expect my son to obey me, try to separate him and his wife or keep him under my thumb.
3. I DECIDE to love my grandchildren like Lois. I will not consider them a nuisance but count them my crown. I will not spoil them, speak ill of their parents to them or ill-treat them, rather tell them Bible stories and lead them to Christ. I will be a help to my children to take care of them in anyway possible to me.
4. I DECIDE not to let anything disturb my relationship with God. I will walk with God like the 365 year old Enoch. I will not be slack in my Bible reading and prayers. I will serve God with fastings and prayer as much as possible like the 84 year old Anna and speak to all about God.
5. I DECIDE to keep myself physically fit like the 85 year old Caleb. I will not be idle. I will walk as much as I can and be helpful to people to the possible extent. I will help in the household as much as my health permits and strive to take care of myself. I will exercise to move all the joints and muscles of my body. I will be careful to follow the prescribed diet and medical advice and maintain my weight and health.
6. I DECIDE not to complain or murmur against anyone or anything. I love the Lord and I know every detail in my life is worked into something good. I believe that through all good and bad experiences God is transforming me like His Son Jesus Christ. So I will bear all things silently. I will not blame others for my situation. I decide to praise God for everything.
7. I DECIDE to prepare myself for my exit from this world. Death need not catch me off guard. I will clear all dues. I will not hold any grudge against anyone. I decide to reconcile even with my worst enemy personally or through correspondence, remembering I must soon face the Judge of judges. I will strive for a clean conscience.
8. I DECIDE to put my household in order like Hezekiah. I will write a will setting apart a sizeable portion for God’s work. I will not show partiality between my children, sons or daughters, while partitioning my properties. Like Jacob I will live my life like a pilgrim realising this is not my permanent abode and sing like Jim Reeves—
This world is not my own,
I’m just a passing through;
My treasures are laid up
Somewhere beyond the blue;
The angels beckon me
From heaven’s open door,
And I can’t feel at home
In this world anymore.
9. I DECIDE not to accuse anyone without proof, nor be paranoid since my memory is failing. I will be cheerful and singing songs. I will read good joke-books and laugh. I will not avoid entertainments, family functions and festivals. I will keep up my spirits by going out. I will make friends of my own age group and spend happy times with them. I will enjoy good and healthy food, watch interesting TV programmes, read books and newspaper, listen to good music and thus entertain myself.
10. I DECIDE to examine myself to see if I have served my own generation by the will of God to the best of my ability like David. My swan song shall be, “ I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Since I have experienced the salvation of God I will depart in peace like Simeon.
