“Jolly lo jimkana.”
“Smashing job Mala.”
“Hoo, hoo, hoo, I don’t know what to dooo!”
“What further plans?”
“Why worry now? I’m going to sleep for six months.”
“There is no exam there,
In my Father’s house,
In my Father’s house.
In my Father’s house...
There are no teachers there
In my Father’s house...
There is joy, joy everywhere!”
She was dancing to a disco tune as she sang. I laughed. Oh, the joys of youth! I longed for my bygone youth.
“You crack! That’s only in heaven! Why so long a sleep?”
“What else do you want me to do?”
“Won’t your church be conducting VBS?”
“Yes, there’s been some talk of that.”
“Why don’t you teach in the VBS?”
“Goodness me! No. I can’t. I’m scared.”
“What goodness? You are not a small girl anymore to put out your tongue and wring your hands. Stop all that. Why should you be scared to teach little children? You will learn a lot.
“Why Mala, you have another 6 months free, don’t you? Listen...”
“For heaven’s sake auntie, please...let me enjoy these good days...”
“You’ll sleep for 2 days. After that you’ll get bored.”
“I’m going to spend time in Bible reading and prayer.”
“Please do that. But why don’t you also go for computer classes? Go for computer classes in the morning. Leam Hindi in the evening. That’ll be very useful. Get an NIV Study Bible. Buy a copy and study well. Read missionary biographies and Reader’s Digest. Read the newspaper. These will increase your general knowledge. Learn bicycling, swimming and whatever you can. Try your hand at cooking too.”
“That requires 26 hours a day and sounds worse than school.”
“Not all on a single day Mala. Do go for picnics, sleep well and enjoy yourself. But use your spare time profitably.
“A master distributed talents to his servants and went away on a journey. When he returned, he praised the servants who used the talents to do business and thus multiplied them. The employer said to him: “Well done, good and faithful servant. You were faithful with little. I will give you authority over many things.” Those of us who have dedicated ourselves to serve God are involved in a business. We must earn the maximum possible. Besides, Mala, free days like these will not always be available. Make the best out of what life has to offer.”
“Much study is a weariness of the flesh.”
“Stop joking. No one guided me along these lines when I was like you. You have the privilege. But the choice is yours.”
