Billy was a lazy boy. He will not place his books or shoes in the proper place. He will not respect people. His mother had to drive him hard to do his work.
One day while searching for his lost book, he found a lamp. “Could it be an Alladin’s lamp?” he wondered. “Let me try,” he said, and rubbed the lamp. Out came a Genie. Billy was overjoyed. “Will you do all my work for me?” he asked the Genie. “Sure, I
will do all your work for you. But on one condition: You must do all I tell you to do for one month,” said the smiling genie. Billy thought for a minute. “It is just for a month. Why not?” So he replied, “No problem. What do you want me to do?”
The genie took a deep breath and said, “You must get up before 6 in the morning and in the next 15 minutes finish your morning duties. You must obey your parents and respect people. You must do your homework, study your lessons and go to school on time.
You must help around the house by taking the garbage out and bringing in the newspaper and doing other odd jobs. When parents or elders call you, you must run to them and politely ask what they want. Instead of watching TV, play outdoor games. Eat
healthy food...”
“Stop,” said Billy, “that’s enough.” He thought, “Just a month; then I’ll lie down and relax.” Billy got up at 5.30 the next day and quickly finished his ablutions. He finished his homework and studied his lessons. He polished his shoes and did some odd jobs at home. When parents called, he ran and presented himself. His parents were surprised and started praising him.
His grades went up and he was made the class leader. Teachers were proud of him. Guests asked their children to be like Billy. More than anything, Billy was proud of himself.
One day the genie appeared. “What?” asked Billy. “Thirty days are over. I am your slave now. What shall I do for you?” asked he. Billy thought, “Should I become lazy again? I love to be busy and smart. I don’t want to lose my popularity.” He told the genie, “No thanks. I don’t need your help. Thanks for making me a brisk, happy boy. And bye to you.”
Try to be like Billy; you will love yourself.
