A monkey went looking for a job. He met a man and asked for some work to do. The man gave a banana to the monkey and said, “You keep this banana with you safely. I will go to the river and have a
bath. I will come back and give you work.”
The monkey was very happy. He clutc- hed the banana with his hands and sat tight. He was sorely tempted to eat the banana. So he closed his eyes and waited. The flavour of the banana was getting through to his nose and he thought, “Is it a sin to look at a banana?” So he opened his eyes and looked at it and waited. After some time he thought, “Is it wrong to even smell a banana?” So he started sniffing at it. Then he said, “Surely it’s not a sin to just lick it.” He licked at the tip. Then he couldn’t control himself. He gobbled up the banana and ran away.
This is how we fall in sin. We convince ourselves that seeing is not sin, hearing is not sin, getting closer is not sin, and before we know it we are in the depth of sin.
Keep yourself from all appearance of evil.
