Give Respect and Get Respect!

John just turned ten and thought it was time for others to stop ordering him around. He thought it was time for him to take over the reins of his life and was confident to run his life.

He always used to come to his grandparents’ house from school and wait for his mother to come and pick him up on her way back from her office. Naturally, he had something to eat during the two-hour gap.

His grandmother was a spic-and-span person and did not like him throwing things around and the wet towel on the bathroom floor. She would ask him to spread the towel on the rack, put off the bathroom light, pick up the toffee wrapper and throw it in the   dust bin, put the chair in its position, etc. Of course, she always had something nice for him to eat.

His grandmother’s loving sternness always irritated him. One day he decided to show her who he was. When she said her usual, “Darling, please put off the bathroom light ...” John retorted, “I am not a servant; That’s not my work.” His grand- mother was   shocked. But she put off the light and did his other chores.

The next day John came home from school famished. The flavour of chicken curry wafted into his nostrils. He expected his grandmother to serve him nice idly and chicken curry as usual. But she was coolly going about her work after greeting him lovingly.   John hesitantly asked, “Can you please give me something to eat?” Pat came a smart reply, “That’s not my work. I am not a servant.” John’s stomach was pinching but grandma was busy.

After half an hour John quietly went to his grandma and said, “Grandma, I’m very sorry. Hereafter I will obey you.” Grandma hugged him and kissed him and brought hot idlies and curry. She explained to him that in a house, everybody is somebody’s servant   and everybody must work. She cooks and John eats her food. So is with everyone. Now John understood. Home life is give and take.
