Berty and Shirley were two sweet kids. Berty was eight years old and Shirley, seven. Their parents took up an assignment in Africa. The children’s schooling could not be disturbed. So they were left in the care of their aunt.
The aunt used to teach Bible to both. But the two used to fight all the time hurling cruel words at each other. When the aunt said, “Why do you fight for bedsheet and pillow? Jesus said if one takes away your coat, you must give up your shirt also. Learn to give up.” Promptly Berty would reply, “Yes, now that I have taken the bedsheet, Shirley must give me the pillow also. Isn’t that what you taught?” They always applied the teaching to the other, not to themselves.
One day their fight reached a climax. The aunt had difficulty preventing fist-fighting. Finally she made them both sit and told them. “Now, I am going to punish you both if you fight like this. Berty, you bring a stick to beat Shirley. Shirley, you bring a stick to beat Berty.” Both of them immediately got to work. Berty chose a cane and started sharpening it, trying it on himself to see if it will give enough pain to Shirley. Shirley chose a stick with little stems that could really hurt.
Both brought their sticks to the aunt with wicked laughter. The aunt said, “Very well. Now, Berty, the stick that you brought will be used for you. And Shirley, I will use your stick on you.”
“Oh, no, cried both.”
