After selling his goods in the market, merchant Mithran was returning home with his bag of money and the unsold goods. On the way he rested in a hall, keeping the goods near him and the money bag in a crack in the wall. When he woke up, he picked up his
goods and came home forgetting the money bag.
Suddenly he remembered the money bag and travelled back to the hall. There he found a notice hanging, “Anyone who has lost a money bag may collect it, giving necessary proof.” He followed the address given and arrived at a hut. It was the cleaner Ponnaian’s hut. Mithran identified the bag and collected it.
Mithran felt he should give the money bag to the honest, poor man. “I want to present you this money bag for your honesty,” said Mithran and started walking away after pressing it into Ponnaian’s hands. “I don’t need your money. You can please take it with you,” said Ponnaian. But Mithran continued to walk.
Ponnaian cried, “Thief, thief” and a crowd gathered and caught Mithran and enquired Ponnaian. Ponnaian said, “He has stolen my good name and the honour so long I have earned,” and explained everything to the people. Mithran was left with no choice but to return with his money. People praised Ponnaian. He and Mithran became friends.
The love of money is the root of all evil. Do not fall into that pit.
