Reuben and Samson were thick friends. Every Sunday they met in the church and both would go to one of their houses. They both were in 10th standard.
One day after church service Samson wanted to go to watch a cricket match. When Reuben offered to come along, Samson said he was going with other friends. Even though Reuben was sad, he didn’t want to be jealous. Now and then Samson started going out
with his ‘other friends.’
Once when he invited Reuben to go with him and his friends to a movie, Reuben was upset. He and Samson never went to cine shows. Reuben understood that Samson was developing new habits and that his friends were not too good. He also noticed Samson
spending lavishly. He asked about it and Samson said that he took money without his parents’ knowledge from the safe. Reuben scolded Samson and threatened to tell his father for his own good. Indeed he told
his father and Samson’s father scolded him and started being careful with the money. Their friendship broke.
One Saturday evening Reuben went to the ground to play cricket. There he found some boys drinking and gambling under a tree. To his shock he found Samson there smoking. He caught hold of Samson’s collar and pulled him and gave him a slap, shouting, “What
are you doing here? Your parents trust you and pay school fees for you and spend so much for you. They love you so much and you are cheating them.” His friends got wild and slapped Reuben and drove him away.
Reuben was very sad for his friend but started to pray for him seriously. Sad to say, Samson and his friends were caught by the police for gambling. They were all taken to their homes and warned in front of their parents and let out saying that if they continued gambling they’d be jailed. Samson failed in 10th but learnt a good lesson.
Faithful friends correct you, scold you and warn you. It may be painful; but listen to them and stick with them. Then your life will be bright. The wrong crowd will take you in the wrong direction.
