Thrice blessed!
Reading: Luke 1:39-45
“Blessed is she who has believed, that the Lord would fulfil His promises to her” (Lk 1:45)
In the crisp greetings that Elizabeth extended to invite Mary into her home, she blesses Mary thrice —
1. Personal Blessing:“Blessed are you among women” (Lk 1:42). 50% of the world’s population is women. Among them only a small percentage is blessed. We must find a place within this bracket. Mary was blessed because she kept her personal life pure. She led a sexually pure life as a teenager and found favour with God and people. Her parents trusted her enough to send her to visit Elizabeth, living in another province. She was thorough with the Word of God which could be seen in her song (Lk 1:46-55). She submitted herself to God’s word unquestioningly without hesitation.
2. Family Blessing:“Blessed is the child you will bear” (Lk 1:42). When you are blessed, the blessing flows from you to your family. “Her children arise and call her blessed” (Prov 31:28). Why? Many women did noble things, but she surpassed them all! She was a topper in blessing her family. “A woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Prov 31:30). It is not enough to be a blessed person in every way. We must transmit our blessings to our family.
3. Ministerial Blessing:“Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfil His promises to her!” (Lk 1:45). Now we know Mary did not question the angel out of unbelief. She ‘believed.’ Zechariah and Mary asked the same question to Gabriel — Zechariah, the old, seasoned priest out of unbelief; but the young teenager and beginner, out of faith. She just wanted to know the modus operandi — the way it would happen.
She brought forth Jesus to the perishing world by faith. You may be young and inexperienced; but believe and start witnessing for God. You will be blessed. The twice blessed woman was Jael — “Most blessed of women be Jael, ... most blessed of tent-dwelling women ... she struck Sisera, she crushed his head, she shattered and pierced his temple” (Jud 5:24-26). She was a simple housewife who by faith killed the enemy. Why can’t we?
Faith is the victory that overcomes the world!
