Golden Girl
Reading: 1 Peter 1:3-9
“He knows the way I take;
when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold” (Job 23:10)
When we go through trials and temptations we cry, “Why Lord, why me?” You know why? He wants you to be the gold of Ophir, the perfect and best gold with not a jot of impurity in it. Job was patient in his trials because he was certain of two things: (1) God is in control (2) The end result. He was not wrong as we see in the end (23:10).
“I will test them like gold” (Zech 13:9). Silver is purified in a crucible but gold is thrown in the furnace (Prov 17:3). It seems the goldsmith waits for his face to be reflected in the molten gold, to make sure that all impurities are removed (Mal 3:3). Painful indeed but what a happy comfortable life cannot do, tears and weeping do. In every trial walk the path of perfection. It is in trials that the Lord knows what’s in our heart. “The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart” (Prov 17:3).
There is one more crucial test to prove our gold. “The crucible for silver, and the furnace for gold, but people are tested by their praise” (Prov 27:21). How do we react when people praise us? If it makes us bend backwards, we are not yet purified; if forwards, then we are pure gold.
Speaking about our eternal salvation, Peter says, “In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith — of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire — may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1 Pet 1:6,7).
Peter was able to write this because he himself was sifted like wheat by satan and his faith stood the trial. As Jesus told him, he started strengthening his brothers and sisters with what he learned from his experience. Don’t be discouraged. Face your trials boldly. Rejoice. Why? God is proving the genuineness of your faith. Your faith is costlier than gold. Even gold may decay and degenerate but your faith will become purer and purer till the last day and bring glory to God.
