Kicking bad habits
Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
“I have the right to do anything,” you say;
but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything;”
but I will not be mastered by anything (1 Cor 6:12)
Bad habits develop over the years and are hard to shed. These can destroy your education, career or future. You should not give up just because you are not able to master a bad habit. Some bad habits can be broken off in a day by a strong decision and will- power. Others may be gradually weaned off over the years. So never give up. Nailbiting, picking the nose, scratching the head, flirting, anger, gossipping, listening to cine songs, TV, day- dreaming for hours, over-sleep, laziness, touchiness, licking spoons and there are a whole lot of bad habits that can master you, if you are careless.
There is no miracle cure for a bad habit. It is hard work. So even at the outset, roll up your sleeves. Failures should not dampen your spirit. You must pick up yourself again and face the issue with stronger determination. Pray and get a friend to pray for you. That will give you the faith and courage to go ahead.
Try indulging in your habit less frequently. If you watch TV for four hours a day, make it three and half for the next month and then three and so on. Supplement the time with a good habit, say, reading a good book or something else you like. Whenever you are tempted to watch TV, come out and sit with a cup of coffee. Distract yourself. Avoid triggers and high risk scenarios. If you know your friends will take you to the wrong place with bad company, be prepared to say a strong ‘No’ and stick to it politely. Don’t give in to pressure. If you are addicted to snacking and over- eating, make it a point not to visit the bakery. If you buy, then buy small amounts. Eat small amounts and keep it in your mouth for a longer time. Instead of biting your nail, try to chew a toothpick. Find an alternate method to turn pages instead of licking your finger.
Maintaining a diary helps a lot. Every day make a note of how many times you indulged in a bad behaviour and vow to bring down the number the next day. Believe that nothing is impossible for a child of God. Persevere and take victory.
Breaking bad habits pays off. You look better, your social graces improve and you get a good name. That is really worth the struggle.
