Yes, Ma’am!
Reading: 2 Kings 4:8-24
“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with
your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner
and heirs with you of the gracious gift of life,
so that nothing will hinder your prayers” (1 Pet 3:7)
Should women expect their husbands to respect them? Of course! Women get so used to disrespect by husbands that they accept it as part of life. Accepting disrespect may serve as a spiritual discipline on humility. But the expectation should never cease. Read about the way the well-to-do woman of Shunem was treated by her husband (2 Ki 4).
What can be considered as disrespect? A husband should call his wife lovingly with respect, not by a sound like ‘Ai.’ A husband scolding a wife using bad words is no, no. Many wives have no voice against verbal abuse. But if at all possible tell him gently to treat you as a person. Extreme verbal abuse leading to emotional abuse must be taken seriously. You can seek the help of a counsellor. Husbands should never demean the wife’s family. They should be allowed to visit as much as the husband. He should not speak ill of his wife to his relatives nor put her down before others. A wife need not be perfect to gain respect. By virtue of her position she is to be respected.
The worst kind of disrespect is unfaithfulness. An extramarital affair kills the marriage and must be treated urgently and seriously. If talking to your husband doesn’t help, seek the help of your in-laws, Church or cousellors. You can read an article titled, ‘Caution — Affair Ahead’ in my website for more details.
Sleeping off when the wife is weeping, talking ill of her to the children, physical abuse, having too many men friends and neglecting the wife, not appreciating, taking her for granted, getting irritated for every small reason, throwing things, not recognizing her gifts and talents and not allowing her to use them, curbing her freedom, not accepting her suggestions, making all the decisions at home are other forms of disrespect.
Husbands should ask their wives, when they feel disrespected and try to correct themselves so that their prayers will reach God (1 Pet 3:7). Give respect, and respect is sure to come!
