Yes, Sir! Yes, Ma’am!
Reading: Exodus 20:12
“Children ... honour your father and mother,
which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well
with you and you may live long on the earth” (Eph 6:1,2)
In a happy family each member honours the other person. Honour is more than obedience. You respect a person by your obedience. Disrespect shatters family harmony. Jesus respected His parents and was obedient to them. That was why He grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man (Lk 2:51,52). Respecting parents blesses you by bringing down God’s blessings on you. David honoured his parents and took care of them in their old age (1 Sam 22:3,4).
Think of how you disrespect your parents and write them down — disobedience, walking off when they are talking, slamming doors, talking back, shouting, provoking them to anger by doing what they don’t like, not helping at home. The list could be very long. Jephthah’s daughter obeyed him though it meant death for her (Judg 11:36).
Do you want a healthy long life? Then make a list of things you can do to honour your parents. Some suggestions are: Celebrate their Birthdays and Wedding Anniversaries, immediate obedience instead of saying, “Sorry, I forgot,” doing simple things at home like keeping your room clean, replacing things from where you took them, laying down the table for meals and clearing the dishes, taking care of parents when they are sick, appreciating mummy’s cooking, saying ‘thank you’ to daddy for paying your school fees, being happy and thankful, etc. You can make your own list.
Take one for a month and practise it the whole month. Don’t be discouraged by failure. You will grow up. Continue it the next month while taking up another discipline. You will find, though it is hard discipline, your parents will start respecting you and be proud of you. Your neighbours, guests and relatives will praise you. More than all that, God will be pleased with you.
In this world, next to God, it is your parents who will guide you through life. They are authorities placed by God over you for your own safety and wellbeing in this life. When they are gone, you will think of them and the sacrifices they made to make your life a success. They will not be there to receive your praises. So do it today.
