Tat for Tit!
Reading: Matthew 7:9-12
“So in everything do to others what you would have them do to you,
for this sums up the Law and the Prophets” (Mt 7:12)
Meditate on the first word, ‘So.’ Jesus was saying that when people came to God asking good things from Him, He doesn’t return evil. He as a Father gives good things. He acts as a good Father expecting people to be His good children. When He lovingly gives them what is good for them, they respond in love.
So, in “everything” act like it. Would you expect your father to give you stone, snake or scorpion for a meal? No, you expect to be treated to a decent meal. Much the same way, you treat him. When you do good to others, they will do good to you. Whatever it may be — forgiveness or kindness or loan or trust or whatever. First you think what you expect someone to do to you in a particular situation. Do the same to them.
Treat your parents the way you expect them to treat you. If you want love, kindness and understanding from your husband, you start doing it, without expecting anything in return and notice the gradual change in him. Normally we expect others to treat us in such and such a way and get disappointed. Instead we should first think, “How do I expect this person to treat me? OK, now I know how to treat her.” Ruth gave love and got love.
Many times we get confused thinking, “I don’t know what’s wrong with her. Why is she treating me like this?” Well, then imagine how they want to treat you. But be patient — it may take days, weeks, months or even years for them to take notice of the way you treat them. Be sure of one thing, God is taking notes secretly. This is all the Law and Prophets. If you don’t know what the Old Testament teaches, this is it. Teaching made simple.
Sit down and write how you want others to treat you. “I want others to be kind, gentle, loving, understanding, helping, faithful, smiling, honest, caring, forgiving, good, appreciating, honouring ... Not shouting, not angry, not criticizing, not unhappy, not stingy, not secretive, not jealous, not murmuring ... etc.” Make your own list. Now, go and do likewise!
