Glass Heart
Reading: Matthew 5:33-37
“But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’
For whatever is more than these is from the evil one” (Mt 5:37)
Why does the above verse start with ‘But?’ Jesus was talking about swearing. If we speak honestly then there is no need to swear. Christianity has become so complicated that now a days we are not able to be open, honest and transparent. We need wisdom, but we need integrity too. We must learn to talk what is in our heart without twisting the facts.
You cannot demand trust. It is gained or lost on the basis of honesty and integrity. People who say what they mean and live consistently with their ideals can be trusted. Even if you cannot agree with a person or don’t approve of their ideals, you can trust the person who is “straight” with you. It is safe to trust that person. Unfortunately Christianity has bred lot of Dr. Jekylls who meta-morphose to be Mr. Hydes to suit their purposes. The frightening fact is that they can rain Scriptures.
Blessed are those whose heart is of glass; who can show on the outside what’s happening on the inside. There is no need to pretend that you don’t have sadness, pain, sin or fear. When you show it out, it can be dealt with. There starts the healing process of God. This is humility and honesty.
Avoid double-talk (Mt 23:16-18). Don’t say one thing to one and the same thing in a different shade to another. Double-talkers cannot be trusted. When questioned about what they said, they will say something else and try to escape. It is more important to “be” spiritual than to “appear” spiritual. It is more important to have a strong marriage than to put up a false front as if everything is okay. When you cheat like this, you don’t get help for what’s going on in your life. Double standard is also dishonesty. You can’t have one set of rules for yourself and a different set for others. Judah played the hypocrite by believing that he could commit adultery while expecting his daughter-in-law to be chaste. Tamar broke his opaque heart and brought out the truth from his own mouth, “She is more righteous than I” (Gen 38:26).
It is not easy to be transparent in this world. We have to pay the cost. But a handful of honest Christians can make a mark than a whole lot of churches. Start working on yourself today.
