She who has eyes, let her read!
Reading: Nehemiah 8:1-3,8
“That night the king could not sleep;
so he ordered the Book of the Chronicles, the record of his reign,
to be brought in and read to him” (Esth 6:1)
“Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women” (Acts 17:11,12).
These Greek women were in the habit of reading. Reading opened their eyes. Reading takes you to different worlds. It is an ageless activity that nourishes your brain. It keeps your brain sharp and slows down memory decline. Train your child to read from a very young age. When they are younger, you can read to them. One who has the habit of reading will never feel lonely. Starting in early childhood can have a positive impact on intelligence in later years.
The time devoted to TV may be given to reading with great benefits. Choose from a variety of books ranging from history, to clean secular magazines. Newspaper is a must read. It expands your knowledge and supplies prayer points. You should know what’s happening in the world. You should not be frogs in the well. One magazine I love is the Reader’s Digest, which I have read from my school days onwards. It has improved my English and expanded my knowledge in various fields. Read books in your mother tongue also, to keep abreast with the vernacular.
If time is a problem, remember, you can read in the restroom too. Aim to read atleast one small book a month. Take a book along for travel or to see a doctor, or bank or even a wedding reception where you may waste your time waiting. Read when you don’t get to sleep. Reading soothes your nerves and calms you down. Reading builds up a library in your brain from which you lend to others.
Have a small library in your house for the benefit of neighbours. If a book has blessed you, buy some copies of it and sell it to others. It is a ministry. That way your reading not only blesses you, it blesses others too.
“The woman who does not read has no advantage over the woman who cannot read” — Mark Twain
