In God’s Waiting Room
Reading: James 5:7-11
“No one who waits on You will ever be put to shame” (Psa 25:3a)
It is a harrowing experience to wait. We look at the wristwatch, we pace up and down and get irritated and may be fight over the delay. But in God’s system, that is how it is. God is never in a hurry. He is very patient in doing things, which we often mistake for slackness.
Sometimes God is quick to answer, but at other times, He tries our patience a bit too much. If you want to learn to wait for God, you need to talk to David and he will strengthen your heart (Psa 27:14). Unfortunately Sarah had none of the Psalms of David. All her hopes of having a son died when she attained menopause. Now what? Should she still wait? The promise was told to Abraham — may be Abraham’s son and not hers. She started oscillating. Her seventyfifth birthday was round the corner and her hope was dying. So she cooked up a plan which became a sore-eye in her family life and a headache for Israel. If she had waited, what a grand world we would have today!
Mary Magdalene waited in the graveyard, hoping against hope to see the Lord and she was not ashamed. May be the others who missed the glorious sight were ashamed, cursing themselves for not waiting at the tomb for three days.
Waiting is not idly going about our work, hoping it will happen some day. “As the eyes of the female slave look to the hand of her mistress,” we need to wait for God’s mercy (Psa 123). The devil will keep on discouraging you saying that God’s promises never happen. Never give in to his suggestions and take your own route. What happens when you wait? The waiting process strengthens our spiritual muscles and lifts us up towards God. We can walk and run and never feel tired. Isaiah compares those who wait for God, to eagles (Isa 40:31).
The farmer sows the seed and patiently waits for the harvest day, looking up at the sky for rain clouds. He does what he should do and leaves the rest in God’s hand (Js 5:7). Yes, there is something we should do; but after that we should rest in hope. Put away thoughts of fear and anxiety and the urge to do something of your own before God clearly directs you. God will show you the way at the right time.
“Blessed are all those who wait for Him” (Isa 30:18).
