Quality Tranquility!
Reading: 2 Kings 4:1-36
“Are you all right? Is your husband all right?
Is your child all right?” “Everything is all right,” she said
(2 Ki 4:26)
This I call as quality tranquility. Her child had died. But for the great woman of Shunem (as KJV puts it) “everything” was fine. How much we women have to learn from her! Life has no guarantees. We face lot of turbulence in the ocean of life. As our lifeboat bobs up and down in the giant waves, we often forget that Jesus is sleeping downstairs, as we scream in despair.
In truth she was in “bitter distress” (v27) but she knew where to pour out her woes. We must learn this secret from her. We should not lament to whoever asks us, “How are you?” One Bible text that has deeply affected me is Isaiah 30:15: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” When things go over our head, we must learn to run to God and take rest. Quieten your heart and be confident that you have someone under whose control is your situation.
Paul admonished the Philippians not to be anxious but take everything to God in prayer (Phil 4:6). He does not say that then their problem would be solved but, “the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (v7). This is the peace we often forfeit.
Whatever may happen in life, do not be agitated. Remain serene knowing God is in control. What can happen to you that has not happened to the saints of the Bible? If He has brought them through, He will bring you through too. “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded” (Heb 10:35).
Remain unruffled. When you come out of your trial, you will be stronger, brighter and better. You will not be a student, you’d have graduated to be a teacher.
What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear;
What a privilege to carry, everything to God in prayer.
Oh, What peace we often forfeit, oh, what needless pain we bear;
All because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer.
