The difficulty of being good
Reading: 2 Timothy 4:1-8
“The fruit of the Spirit is goodness” (Gal 5:22)
We all want to be good. But there is a voice yelling against us, “You are so bad. You are the worst. What you do is wrong. You do nothing right,” from dear and near ones. I had such an experience a few years ago when a lady shouted at me. I was deeply hurt. I asked God, “Lord, what did I do to deserve such a tirade? Am I really that bad? I try to be good, to improve. Then why do people say I am bad?” God’s answer came in the most unexpected way. The next day in my personal devotion I sang the song that was due for the day in Tamil, composed by the legendary Evangelist Sister Sarah Navaroji (1938-2014) and the gist of the song is —
The Shulamite is like an army with banners,
Like the sun, like the moon;
With flying flags and wonderful testimony
She sings her way to victory.
Let’s follow Jesus as His faithful disciples
Till the end, till we win;
Without fear, in Jesus’ name
We’ll defeat the devil and overcome.
The hands of Saul that chased David
Shall become weak and wither;
Balaam’s curse shall fly away;
Oh, holy people of God, shout victory!
It was God’s voice to me. The peace of God that passes all understanding flooded my soul. I must be like the moon, like the sun, like an army. I should keep going forward. No quitting.
All of us face the temptation to quit like Elijah. The happiest person will be the devil if we quit because that’s what exactly he is aiming at. The holiness of Jesus was not prominent. Nobody said, “He is sinless, so He must be God.” On the other hand they said, “You are mad, You have a demon, You are a deceiver, glutton and lover of wine.” Paul and team were called deceivers, yet they were true.
Voices were crying for Jesus to come down. But till the time He could say, “It is finished,” He never said, “I quit.” So keep going, keep on going. Become good, gooder and goodest!
