Food that does not spoil
Reading: John 6:25-29
"Do not work for food that spoils,
but for food that endures to eternal life" (Jn 6:26,27)
Jesus fed more than five thousand miraculously till they ate to their throat. Now they followed Jesus for that material, worldly benefit. Are they any different from us? Do we want God for material and worldly blessings alone? Jesus had already taught them saying that these things only the Gentiles seek. But we must seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness (Mt 6:31-33).
He did not stop with telling them the plain truth but guided them in the right path too. There are two kinds of foods: (a) Food that spoils and (b) Food that lasts to eternal life. Man shall not live by bread that he bakes, but by “every” word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Mary didn’t want to miss even a single word from the mouth of Jesus. So she dropped all work and sat at His feet listening. Martha “worked” for food that spoils. Jesus chided her saying, Martha, Martha, you are “worried” and “troubled” about “many” things. But one thing is needed and Mary has chosen that “good part” which will not be taken away from her (Lk 10:41,42).
We give too much importance to food. We earn and earn more, so we can eat, eat more, buy food material, eat out, bake cakes, travel and eat variety food, etc. Jesus is trying to divert our attention to the one lasting food — His Word! Jesus came to the end of His sermon in John 6 by saying, “The words I have spoken to you — they are full of the Spirit and life” (v63). When many disciples wanted to leave Jesus for the hard teaching, Peter said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (v68).
The Jews asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? Does not the Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” (Jn 7:41,42). Their Scripture knowledge was laudable but they didn’t work on it. If they had asked Jesus, or made a trip to Galilee for a chat with Mary about His birth, or if they had consulted the genealogies of the family of David, or the register at Bethlehem, they would have known the truth. But they didn’t want to sweat. They lost their eternal life. Sweat and read your Bible.
Let us today decide to work for the food that endures to eternal life. Spend at least one hour a day meditating the Word of God. Choose the good part that will not be taken away from you.
