Super-agers
Reading: Luke 2:36-38
“Anna ... was a widow until she was eightyfour” (Lk 2:37)
To live to be eightyfour was great. Anna was active at that age. If you have crossed sixty, good; if you have crossed seventy, very good; if you have crossed eighty and in good health, excellent. I would like to give you a few hints to become a super-ager that I have gleaned over the years, especially the Reader’s Digest. There’s an old saying: “It’s not about adding years to your life but adding life to your years.” So here’s how you can feel younger at any age.
The first hint of course is about dietary habits. Eat a good amount of cereal fibre. Include a variety of grains in your food. Instead of wheat flour, you can go in for multigrain atta.
If you want to live to a ripe old age, learn adaptability. You may have to live with your grown-up children, in-laws, grandchildren or others which may be stressful. But learn to ignore certain things and have a take-it-easy attitude. Take up reading; it will reduce your stress levels. Keep busy either in housework or otherwise. Find something to do. Feeling useless will kill you early. Socialize. Loneliness is another killer. Interact with your neighbours and have funtime. Have guests as often as possible.
Revel in memories and share old life stories with family. It will help you laugh, which contributes to good health and long life. Howling with laughter dilates blood vessels and encourages blood flow.
Yogurt is a proven health ingredient. Make it a regular habit and include it in your daily diet. Spinach, walnuts and fish supply you with omega-3 fatty acids which contribute to long life.
Movements help you keep fit. Sleeping too much (more than nine hours), sitting too much (more than seven hours a day) and not working out enough (less than 150 minutes a week) correlate to quadrupling the risk of premature death.
Dressing well makes you feel good and that adds to your long life. Exposing yourself to sunshine at least 10-15 minutes a day supplies you with Vitamin D, the low levels of which have been associated with osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension and cancer.
Keep yourself hydrated and get enough Vitamin C.
Singing and dancing I believe have long-term benefits for both cardiovascular and mental health. They make you feel less lonely.
I should not leave out the most important secret of long life — faith in God. It helps you face the ups and downs of life with equanimity. You just tell God everything and relax. Having a true Friend by your side all the time helps, isn’t it?
