I love people!
Reading: Acts 9:36-42
“Love your neighbour as yourself. I am the Lord” (Lev 19:18)
A man complained to God, “Lord, there is so much suffering in this world. There is so much of poverty and sickness and calamities. Why can’t you do something about it?” God replied him: “Sure, I have done something about it. I have kept you in this world.”
Our world is centered around ourselves. It is mostly ‘my family, my job, my income, my, my, my...’ We hardly have the time to think about others. Look around the world — There are people who have lost everything in an earthquake, migrants are drowning, people groups are killed like rats. What are we doing about it? We say, “My money will not reach them. It is a corrupt society.” Right. So what do we do? Spend all the money on ourselves? We go on shopping sprees and splurge on clothes and gadgets. We have everything big, a big house, a big car; we eat too much and wear too much. Most of us are already swamped with things.
Let us stop this mad business and start looking around us. The poor are always with us. Let us become prolific donors of our money. Be on the lookout for needy people. Follow a beggar to his house. See if a widow needs anything. Strike up a conversation with a street kid. These threads will lead you somewhere, where you can profitably invest your money. Get others involved. Encourage your rich friends to give. Take them to places which will challenge them.
“Happy is the man who at the end of his life possesses only what he has given to others,” said Amando Fuentes Aguirre. Jesus and team had a moneybag from which to help the poor. People are poor because we are rich. If we give away our excess, our poor neighbour will survive. Take up one poor person and build up her life. You will start feeling the joy of it and will want to do more and more. The more you do, God will give you more ideas to promote philanthropy in a big way.
Jesus said when we help the poor we are doing it to Him. Jesus is wandering our streets, living in our neighbourhood, hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, a stranger with no friends to visit — waiting for you. Don’t you ever complain again to God that the world is very bad. He will complain back to you that you are too rich for your poor neighbour.
