21st Century Proverbs

Reading: Proverbs 7 (Adapted here for young girls)

1. My daughter, keep my words and store up my commands.
2. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3. Bind them on your fingers; write them on your heart.
4. Say to wisdom, “You are my sister.”
5. They will keep you from the adulterous man.
6. At the window of my house I looked down through the lattice.
7. I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young girls, a girl who had no sense.
8. She was returning after school, after tuition, walking in the direction of his house.
9. At twilight, as the day was fading, as the dark of night set in.
10. Then came out a boy in bike to meet her, dressed in jeans and T-Shirt with a cigarette in his mouth.
11. He is unruly and defiant, his feet never stay at home.
12. Now in the street, now in the bus stand, at every corner he lurks.
13. He guided her to a lane and kissed her and said:
14. I have noticed what a good girl you are. I was longing for such a girl.
15. That’s why I came to meet you; I looked for you and found you.
16. Come home; there is nothing to fear. We’ll play chess.
17. Don’t worry about your parents; you can easily cheat them with some lies.
18. I cannot live without you. If you say, ‘No,’ I’ll commit suicide.
19. My parents are not at home. Only tomorrow they return. They don’t love me. I am starved of love.
20. I will make you the queen of my life. I will marry you soon.
21. With persuasive words he led her astray. He seduced her with his honey talk.
22. She followed him like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose.
23. Till an arrow pierced her liver, like a bird darting into a snare.
24. Now then, daughters, listen to me; pay attention to what I say.
25. Do not let your heart turn to his ways or stray into his paths.
26. For he has spoilt many girls; yes, many ‘religious’ girls have fallen into his trap.
27. His love is the highway to hell, leading down to a wasted life.
