Are you a worm?

Reading: Numbers 12:1-16

“I am a worm” (Psa 22:6).

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”

(Mt 5:3)

To understand poorness in spirit, think of a poor man standing before a rich man, hands folded and head bowed down. He is treated roughly yet he doesn’t pay back — just like our Lord Jesus. Following are some ways to exhibit poorness of spirit —

• To be poor in the spirit is to accept counsel. It is to tell openly that so and so’s counsel helped in such and such a way. It is to admit that because I didn’t accept counsel that I suffered. It is not hiding behind a mask or giving a false front. It is willing to learn.
• It is continuing someone’s friendship though my counsel was not heeded to. It is not to belittle her when she suffers because she didn’t listen to me.
• It is confessing that my work was improved by so and so. It is not ashamed to accept help for the betterment of its own.
• Knowing a friend as a thief and cheat, it still continues to call her a friend, and what more, accepts her kiss. It is not ashamed to be found in the wrong crowd and be called a friend of sinners.
• It allows its rightful rights to be robbed away and yet continues its cordial relationship with her. And doesn’t even give a hint to her or others of her loss.
• It returns all credit that does not belong to her with a ‘No thanks’ note acknowledging that it does not belong to her. It points out the person to whom the credit really belongs. When its own credit goes to someone, however, it does not try to divert it to self; and not get angry with the other for accepting the credit graciously.
• It does not try to cover up its failures but is open to be fingerpointed. When it advises someone wrongly by mistake, it does not find means to throw the blame on the other, rather apologises.
• It doesn’t go about bragging that so and so was helped by her counsel. When someone shares her accomplishment proudly, it doesn’t say, “I prayed for you.” Elizabeth never bragged about strengthening Mary’s faith (Lk 1:42-45).
• It doesn’t bother if its ideas are stolen.

Be a worm, dear one, be a worm!
