“She wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and placed Him in a manger,
because there was no guest room available for them” (Lk 2:7)
I cannot think of a better example of someone for ‘Simple Living and High Thinking’ than Jesus. I know of no other child born in a manger. He was the King of the Jews but never rode a horse, leave alone Mercedes Benz. But He thought high stuff. John Baptist was a priest by birth and a prophet by God’s choice. Yet he cared neither for fine clothes or the choicest food. He was more than a prophet in thinking. Nowadays the trend is more towards High Living. We want a big house, a big car, a big TV, a big everything. When we strive towards this end, naturally our thinking shrinks. Gandhiji was an utterly simple man who brought the British rule to its knees by his high thinking. The lure of TV advertisements and company loans are driving people crazy. We fall for every bait. Let us learn to say an emphatic ‘No’ to high living. Simplify your life as much as possible so you will have enough time and energy to think high. Jochebed, Moses’ mother, was a slave woman (Ex 6:20). But her high thinking saved the nation of Israel from bondage.
The most important things in life are not things. When your income goes up don’t increase your standard of living but increase your standard of giving. Stop thinking about yourself and start thinking about others, those who deserve your attention. Ask God to help you think right. If you have lot of energy, divert it towards worthy causes that will come with you to eternity. God has given talents for each of us. Can your talents be channelized for the benefit of the Kingdom of God?
I see many young people studying higher and higher, taking up jobs that pay them five figure salaries, buy a luxury car and other modern facilities from loans. For what? We live today and die tomorrow. How will these benefit you in eternity? Be wise. Think as high as the heavens. What will be deposited in your heavenly account? Read the lives of David Livingstone, George Washington Carver, Abraham Lincoln and the like which will enable you to think high. God has not brought you into this world to live for hundred years and die, but to die and live for eternity. So prepare yourself for your heavenly future.
