“The Lord has seen my misery” (Gen 29:32)
The lives of Leah and Rachel were too intricately woven to be unravelled, that each failed to live her own life and flourish. Each was controlled by the other. The strings of Leah’s life were in Rachel’s hands and vice versa.
Leah was made miserable by Rachel (Gen 29:32). Rachel was jealous of her sister (30:1). That drove her to the thought of killing herself. It was not physical wrestling, but emotionally Rachel was fiercely wrestling with Leah (30:8). “You have taken away my husband,” says Leah (30:15). Rachel died in sorrow (35:18) naming her son, ‘Son of My Sorrow.’
Hatred and jealousies so fill our lives that we constantly compare ourselves with others and feel miserable. We let hatred eat away our lives. Instead of acting the way God wants us to act and bloom, we react to our surroundings and wither away.
In an attempt to wipe away King David’s hatred for his son Absalom from his heart, the wise woman of Tekoah gave a beautiful illustration to the King: “We will surely die and become like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises means, so that His banished ones are not expelled from Him” (2 Sam 14:14). There are deep truths here that we can tie up to our discussion. First, hate has no future; our physical life will end once for all. Second, God’s mercy and forgiveness are unfathomable. Though He may banish someone from Him in anger, He always finds a way to bring Him back to Him in love. He doesn’t kill the relationship.
As long as we allow hatred or jealousy rule our hearts, we allow the strings of our life in our enemies’ hands. They control us. Free yourself from that enmity and the strings are cut. You are a free bird. You can flourish and bloom by God’s design. We are our own self, living our own life; not puppets of our enemies.
If you are under the power of hatred, free yourself today. Let that paralysing poison go out of your blood. Start praying for that person and devise ways to do good to her. There you are, soaring as an eagle, God’s free woman!
