“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him” (Psa 127:3)
“What shall I do with my baby?” cries a young mother. “Love him, cuddle him, kiss him, sing lullaby, enjoy him,” is the answer. But she wails, “Oh, I want to do all that to my baby, but I have to join duty. And what shall I do?”
Times are changing and mothers have no time for their children. Many mothers feel guilty because they are unable to read the Bible, pray or serve God as before, with a baby in hand. They frantically look for their mother or mother-in-law or a maid who can take care of the baby. Samson’s mother had to sacrifice for her son. She could not eat or drink as she pleased. She had to carefully bring up the child as a Nazirite. She groomed a judge for Israel. Yes, motherhood means sacrifice!
It is good to remind yourself that baby is a valuable gift from God and He will feel sad if you slight His gift. Any other person taking care of the baby will lack the maternal instinct and hormones. Children have emotional and physical needs, but they are not mature enough to express their needs when they lack it. They may cry, vomit, throw temper-tantrum, throw fits, or express it in uncertain terms which the parents may fail to decipher. Parents may even beat the child for misbehaviour, whereas she is only craving for your attention and love.
Stop feeling guilty if you are unable to devote time for God’s things. The baby will grow up. These are all passing things and the Lord is not going to hold you guilty for not being on your knees for one hour or not going for outreach (1 Sam 1:21-23).
Children are clay in our hands and you should not miss the crucial years of their growth. Just being there for them, and your mere presence means a lot to them. Don’t hesitate to hug and kiss even your grown-up children. Listen to your kids as they come running from school. Teenagers need to know your teenage experiences.
These are the little ones who are going to make an impact in tomorrow’s world. Jochebeth taught Moses from creation to his birth not knowing the influence it would have on her son and the world. The input you give to your child is the contribution you make to the world.
