Who shut your mouth?
Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6
“She opens her mouth with wisdom,
and on her tongue is the law of kindness” (Prov 31:26)
Many women have misunderstood Paul’s instruction for women to be quiet (1 Tim 2:12; 1 Cor 14:35). Paul did not want women to be asking questions in the Church, creating disturbance. For lack of clear teaching women have kept their hands over their mouths. They have silenced themselves. Jesus emancipated women in a male-dominated Israelite society. He gave them a voice.
Mary the mother of Jesus poured out her heart to Elizabeth and took the lead to solve a problem in the wedding house. But she also kept things in her heart. This is the discernment women need — When to talk and when not; how and where to talk. This comes only after many painful experiences. A woman who wants to shine for God must not be afraid of making mistakes. I have made umpteen number of mistakes and that’s what built me up.
You must be able to freely talk to your parents putting forth your views and arguments and even question them. But take care to do it with prayer and respect without raising your voice or using foul words. Many wives are too careful in their conversation with their husbands, so as not to offend him. This kills relationship. If you hurt him, all you have to do is to say, “Sorry.” You grow together by sharing your views. This leads to arguments and fights. Step by step you learn to drop hurtful words and not become emotional. Even after a hot clash you learn how to cool down immediately. The early years are maddening but later years are a blessing if you stick together against all odds.
Women can take up counseling. You can do some course to improve your counseling skills. If God is giving you messages and if you have invitations, you must let Him use you. You can teach women groups (Tit 2:3,4). Younger women need experienced women to guide them. Where there is an argument or discussion you must not hesitate to put forth your point of view. Especially these days when women are climbing the corporate ladder their brain potential must not be buried. Study the lives of women and see for yourself how women were outspoken and how many good things have emerged out of it. Another area where women can use their voice is singing. Women can lead in worship and join the choir. Glorify God by your talents.
