Gold ring in a pig’s snout
Reading: Proverbs 8:1-12
“The wise woman builds her house,
but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down” (Prov 14:1)
Nobody wants to be a foolish woman. “Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion” (Prov 11:22). So let’s see how best we can avoid tearing our life down —
1. We read of only one foolish woman in the Bible and that is Job’s wife. She was foolish because she was praising God in prosperity and cursing Him in adversity (Job 2:10). So, that is our first lesson — to hang on to God whether life takes us up the clouds or down the pit.
2. The next mark of an unwise lady is clamour and lack of knowledge (Prov 9:13). She is a loud and noisy woman who has least interest in developing herself. So learn to talk softly, gently and without emotional outbursts (Prov 17:28). This may take a long, long time. Don’t waste your spare time. Read, study and gather knowledge. Be constantly developing yourself.
3. Lack of discipline is a fool’s quality. Train yourself towards moral and mental improvement. Let the Bible be your guidebook because it makes the simple wise (Psa 19:7). Such training will lead to self-discipline, helping you to submit to rules and authority (Prov 10:8). Be an organized person and not a scatter brain.
4. Wagging tongue is a woman’s speciality. Such a person is termed a fool by the Bible (Prov 10:18). Women gossip a lot and many have become victims to it. If you have anything against anyone, go to him or her and have a loving, gentle, straight talk. There is no point in putting up a friendly face with hatred boiling in your heart. It is an unspoken lie. This leads to talking about them behind their back, often with exaggeration and twisted facts. The Bible says, “Do not go about spreading slander among your people” (Lev 19:16).
5. Parents, teachers, leaders and others advise us. Our natural reaction is to feel that we are right. It is hard to say, “Ok, I will do as you say.” But if the one advising you is a worthy person, then give ear to what she says. Young girls and others have ruined their lives by stubbornly choosing to go their way (Prov 12:15; 15:5).
Want to know if you are wise? Just see if your parents are joyful over you (Prov 15:20). We will see more tomorrow.
