Heart Folly
(Continuation) Reading: Acts 5:1-11
“What comes out of a person is what defiles them.
For it is from within, out of a person’s heart,
that evil thoughts come ... folly” (Mk 7:20-22)
6. Jesus rightly pointed out the origin of foolishness as the heart. So a girl or woman who hates foolishness and wants to become wise should start working at the heart. While talking to the Pharisees, He called them fools and said that they cleaned up the outside but inside they were full of greed and wickedness (Lk 11:39,40). The Pharisees concentrated on their robes, street prayers and public ministry to mendicants to establish their holiness. Taking the Bible in our hands, going to Church for a show and a dress code are not measures of our piety. Let’s go to the root, the heart, and start searching out the evil hiding there and root it out.
7. The Preacher says that the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure (Eccl 7:4). Pleasure, mirth, laughter, jollity and enter-tainments are definitely needed for a happy life that God wishes for us. But our heart should not be there. We should know where to stop. We should never allow pleasure to rob us of our valuable time and make fools of us.
8. Jesus quoted a man who hoarded riches and said, “You fool!” (Lk 12:20). Would Sapphira have thought that very day, before nightfall, her life would be demanded from her and someone else would get what she prepared for herself? Jesus recommended an excellent medicine for inner cleansing of greed — “Be generous to the poor and everything will be clean for you” (Lk 11:41). “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction” (1 Tim 6:9).
9. Not knowing God’s will can make us fools, top to bottom. Our life will take wrong turns and dump us where we do no want to be. The way back may be hard and exhausting. That’s why Paul admonishes, “Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is” (Eph 5:15-17). In these evil days, the Bible is our torchlight. Go by it.
Love wisdom and hate foolishness. We will conclude tomorrow.
