Eating and sleeping are considered unspiritual. But healthy eating and healthy sleeping are something to be enjoyed. They are part of the pleasure of life. God has given us a life to enjoy, not to drag on. “God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” (1 Tim 6:17). Jesus fasted when He needed to fast and ate when He needed to eat. In fact He ate so well that people called Him a glutton!
There are many who skip breakfast, instead downing coffee or tea now and then. Coffee and tea are good in small amounts but a meal supplies you with essential nutrition. See that your breakfast supplies you with a good amount of protein. Especially children should not be deprived of breakfast in the school-going, growing age. A good breakfast boosts our efficiency. “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a commoner and dinner like a poor man,” is a practical adage.
A good healthy meal should include carbohydrates, proteins and fats with good helpings of vegetables, salads, fruits and plenty of water.
To avoid flatulence: 1. Drink two big glasses of water after brushing your teeth; 2. Never overeat; 3. Don’t eat in-between meals; 4. Avoid oily junk food. Cooking should be a delight instead of a duty as much as eating should not be a pain but a pleasure. Surprise your family with new recipes. Have a dessert when possible. Let eating time be a time of joy and love, not of criticism, correction or business. Be grateful to God and the one who cooked.
Do whatever possible to avoid fractured sleep. When you build a house, plan exhaust fans in the bedrooms, hall and kitchen, to keep the house cool. Spending to keep the mosquitos away is not a waste. Don’t worry in the night. Believe there is a God who cares for you. Memorize Philippians 4:6 and remember it if anxiety keeps you awake. Coffee, tea and catnaps may be contributing factors to fitful sleep. Have a comfortable bed that does not give you backache. Do not skimp on sleep. Whoever cheats on sleep, working overtime is embezzling herself.
Good food and good sleep go a long way in keeping you happy every day. If you are able to eat well and sleep well, be thankful to God. These are two great blessings of God (Eccl 5:19).
