Every day of this year is made by the Lord and we should rejoice in it. It should not turn out to be a sad day. We will see one more thing to make a day happy —
Take interruption in its stride. “There are many plans in a person’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel — that will stand” (Prov 16:9). We can plan a day to the minute. But we must give a free hand to the Lord to add or delete according to His heart’s desire. An unexpected phone call, an unannounced visitor, an accident, a sickness and any such thing can throw the day out of gear. Sometimes (why sometimes, often) when there is unexpected interference we act with unbecoming arrogance. We frown at unwanted guests. Dealing with such intrusion needs a lot of wisdom. The days when we just put on our slippers, hopped into the car and decided whom to visit, are all gone. Today everybody is busy. Grandmothers are working. So our schedule for the day is tight. So what do we do?
A young girl was at our doorstep at an odd hour. I spent an hour with her. She went home which was three hours journey from our place, and sent me a letter. She had come to me with plans to spend some time and go back and commit suicide. After the get-together she changed her mind. The letter raised goosebumps on my skin. God-sent interruption indeed! And I wouldn’t have traded it for my plans for the hour. We should be more relaxed and learn to flow with the will of God.
Interruptions may not be God-sent all the time. If we discern it is not God-appointed we must politely deal with the situation. James explains it in the fourth chapter of his letter. The crystals of his counsel are that our plans for the next day should be subject to God’s will. Or else it is arrogance. So be open-minded to accept God’s will for the day.
We also need the wisdom and courage to say, “No” to certain pressures thrust on us. It is not wise to let people take advantage of our kindness. Gently but firmly put forward your “No’s” or else people will eat away your precious time.
Happy is the day run in God’s will!
