For many women, husbands are as good as stone pillars or non- existent. He just comes, eats and goes out. The woman is left to fend for herself. Worse still, they may be harassed by their husbands. What does a woman do in such a situation?
We have the example of one such woman in the Bible: Abigail. Her husband was wealthy, surly and mean in his dealings. But Abigail was intelligent and beautiful (1 Sam 25:2,3). Life dealt harshly with her because he was a drunkard, hurling insults at people and a wicked man that no one could talk to. But Abigail more than made up for his unseemly behaviour. She managed the household efficiently and was held in respect by the servants. She could not run to her husband in emergencies but had to take a quick decision all by herself. For all that, she wanted to save his life. She was truly the wife of Proverbs 31. She brought him good, not harm, all the days of his life (v12).
For most women life is not a smooth sail. They try to obey the husband, treat him with respect and cook him three grand meals a day. But when they are insulted, humiliated, disrespected and despised, day in and day out, they are tempted to throw up their hands and give up.
The first passage that comes to our mind is 1 Peter 3:1-6. It begins with, “Wives, in the same way ...” Which way? Let your eyes travel a few sentences before to 2:23 which says, “When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly ... Wives, in the same way ...”
Your relationship wi th your husba nd should not change according to his behaviour. It should be according to the Sermon on the Mount. Keep doing good to him irrespective of the way he treats you. Entrust yourself to God who judges fairly.
Your virtue of love will be challenged in many ways over the years. But never let it be anything other than the love that you had when you married him. To be a good wife in spite of the husband’s character is the most daunting of the wife’s calling.
If you cannot love your husband, how can you love your enemy?
