Bathsheba, Tamar, Rahab and Ruth might have thought, “I am a sinner,” or, “I am a Gentile.” But today they would be rejoicing that they were the foremothers of Jesus (Mt 1:3-6). Eve would have suffered under the heavy guilt of bringing death to mankind. But today she would rejoice that she also brought the life-giving Saviour to the world. Sarah would have felt awful to have been the instrument of bringing forth Ismael. But today she would be rejoicing at the grace of God to have her name recorded as an ‘obedient’ wife (1 Pet 3:6) and be in the Hall of Fame (Heb 11:11).
Miriam, I am sure, struggled after God punished her for speaking against Moses. But today she’d be rejoicing because the Bible records her as a leader (Mic 6:4).
Our God is not just our God, He is our Father; He not only forgives all our sins and heals all our diseases and redeems our life from the pit, He also crowns us with love and compassion. There was no talk of enquiry when the Prodigal returned. It was just easting. God forgives and forgets. It is the devil who condemns. “The accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down” (Rev 12:10).
Paul decided to forget what was behind and move forward, pressing toward the goal to win the prize for which God had called him (Phil 3:13,14). Imagine a runner looking back and running! Will he hope to win the prize? “He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me?” (Isa 50:8).
Be a Mary Magdalene from whom Jesus cast out seven demons. It was a well-known fact among the disciples. But look at the combination of facts — “He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had driven seven demons” (Mk 16:9). Why was Mark combining these two facts? It is just to tell us that God is gracious. Given the list of all the wives of David, whom would you choose to be the foremother of Jesus? Certainly not Bathsheba. That is God! So be encouraged. Never allow satan to condemn you reminding you of your past. That’s how he drove Judas to suicide. Overcome him by the words of God and walk head high. You are a saint!
