Dare To Be A Deborah!
Reading: Judges 4:4-15
“And so I will go to the king, which is against the law;
and if I perish, I perish” (Esth 4:16)
Esther dared to walk in. It was a life or death choice. Deborah went to war which was considered a male bastion. In a critical situation when David escaped out of Jerusalem a servant girl took the risk of being an informant. Another woman spread a covering over the well were the spies were hiding and scattered grain over it. When Absalom’s men came in search of them, she misguided them (2 Sam 17:17-20). Many men and women risked their lives by helping the Jews to escape the country when Hitler was slaughtering them. Priscilla was another daredevil who risked her neck to save Paul (Rom 16:4).
This quality is sublimating like camphor in today’s spiritual world. Women need to possess nerves of steel like Deborah. Jesus said, “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves” (Mt 10:16). He warned them of all the trouble they might expect. But it is in this context that He said, “Fear not,” and spoke about the sparrows and the numbered hairs on our head.
Today many are afraid because of the prevailing situation. It was still worse for the disciples after the resurrection of Jesus. But men and women risked their lives to shout the Good News. That is why they witnessed miracles like the lame leaping up, prisons opening and the dead rising. We are complacent; we go to Church, read our Bibles and say a silent prayer. Life cannot be more boring.
The people of Zebulun and Naphtali risked their lives to save Israel (Jud 5:18). Barnabas and Paul put their lives on the line for the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 15:26). Epaphroditus dared to do things for Paul at the risk of his own life (Phil 2:30). No wonder these people shook the world.
“You women who are so complacent ... Tremble, you complacent women,” says God (Isa 32:9,11). Don’t say, “There’s a lion outside! I’ll be slain in the streets” (Prov 22:13). Get up and go. I also have trembled to go where God guided me. But whenever I obeyed, I witnessed miracles. Fear not, fear not, fear not!
Put your life on the line for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!
