1...2...3...Escape!
Reading: Genesis 16:1-16
“Go back to your mistress and submit to her” (Gen 16:9)
Hagar was ill-treated by Sarai and she decided to run away from the torture. But God’s design for her life was different. He wanted Hagar to go through the discipline of submission. He wanted to break down her pride. He wanted her to understand that the child was His gracious gift, not her own.
Women are born to suffer. There exists an enmity between the wily old serpent and the woman: “I will put enmity between you and the woman” (Gen 3:15). So he keeps attacking them. Youngsters suffer loss of parents or ill-treating and unloving parents. Studies is a burden, too much for their age. Working women have their own problems. Married women suffer in many ways. Widows have sufferings peculiar to their situation.
Nobody wants to suffer. We all want a happy carefree life. We feel if we run away from our problems we will be relieved and we can enjoy the peace we search for. But God is more interested in moulding us. This training will make mature Christians who will be able to teach others. God wants to build up our character. When we learn to give up our pride and submit and love and accept, God will gently lead us out of the situation. Till then for every problem ask God, “Lord, what do you want me to learn from this?” Ask yourself, “If Jesus had been in my place, what would He have done?” Allow God to mould you and make you profitable for His Kingdom. I don’t think young Esther would have liked to marry a married man with many wives, though he was the king. But she abandoned herself in God’s hand and was used of God mightily.
Cheer up. Your deliverance is not far off. Hagar not only understood that He was the God who saw her, but in her trial she saw the One who saw her (v13). God sees your tears. But now is the time for you to see the One who sees you.
Hannah had to go through mental torture. First of all it was waiting for a baby, year after year. And then came the blow that Elkanah (probably) decided to take in another wife.
What prevented Hannah from going back to her mother’s house to escape the suffering or end her life? Only her trust in God. She learnt prevailing prayer.
So, hang on, dear one, let come what may!
