One foot on the shore!
Reading: Judges 17,18
“Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me” (Mt 16:24)
“Rachel stole her father’s household gods” (Gen 31:19). Rachel was not like Leah who leaned on God heavily. She had physical beauty which the Bible calls as vain, not the spiritual beauty. She was jealous of her sister. Jacob was her god. Instead of going to God with her problem she expected her husband to fulfil her needs (Gen 30:1,2). No doubt Jacob had told Leah and Rachel about the living God. While Leah was fully convinced, Rachel was riding on two horses. Like Orpah, she was double-minded and let her soul take victory over her spirit (Ruth 1:14). She was holding on to God with one hand and idols with the other.
Many women are like that. They want God, only as long as it is convenient. When God demands their total allegiance they flunk. They serve two masters. While one master is God, the other could be money, gold, clothing, relationship or anything else. Elisha asked the Israelites, how long they would sit on the fence. He urged them to choose one. During the time of the Kings, the “people were worshiping the Lord and serving their idols” (2 Ki 17:41).
How they resemble us! We go to Church one day a week and serve our idols all the other six days. God will have 100% or nothing. We must not allow ourselves to be mastered by anything. Let us examine ourselves to see who is our master. Are we under the power of anything or anyone? (1 Cor 10:23). Judas was doing just that. Finally he decided to serve Mammon and betrayed His Master. The love of money led him to his destruction. Let us not fall into the same pit. Make your decision today. God and Dagon, God and Mammon cannot dwell in the same temple and that temple is you! (1 Sam 5:1-5; Mt 6:24).
Micah’s mother was a confused woman. She would curse in one breath and bless the Lord in the next breath (Judg 17:2). She consecrated her silver to the “Lord” solemnly to make an “image!” She was a Jewish woman and ought to have known that idolatry was wrong (Ex 20:3-5). But she did not make an effort to know and live by the Word of God. She had lot of money. She was crazy about silver and collected a good sum of it. It became her idol (Judg 17). Is she not very much like a modern woman whose gods are gold, silver, job, name and fame? Stop worshipping your gods and come to the one true God who is trustworthy.
