I Want It and I Want Now
Reading: Numbers 11:4-6,34
“No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave” (1 Cor 9:27)
“Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving” (Num 11:4 NKJV). The women among the crowd also were party to the sin. What is this sin? Not the craving but the yielding. I want to look at both the acts separately.
Craving is natural and normal. Eve “saw” that the tree was good for food, pleasant and desirable. She took the fruit in her hand. So far she had not committed any sin. But these are steps leading to sin. When she ate it, the process was complete.
These are the steps described by James. “Each one is tempted when she is drawn away by her own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death” (Js 1:14,15). Here clearly desire and sin are demarcated. There is a whale of space between the two. There is time to think and decide. But the riff-raff women “yielded” to the craving just like Eve. Lot’s wife yielded to the temptation of looking back (Gen 19:26). Herodias yielded to the sin of adultery (Mt 14:3); Euodia and Synteche yielded to fighting (Phil 4:2). The people who had “yielded to craving” were buried (Num 11:34). When temptation presents itself as money or a person or food or whatever, your entire body and being cries to taste it. Paul says that in such situations he struck a blow to his body and made it his slave (1 Cor 9:27).
We women are prone to craving. We crave for clothes and jewels, food and lust, outings and love. Stand in the gap between temp- tation and yielding. Is it worth it? What are the consequences? Will I be pleasing my Saviour? Will I be spoiling my testimony? If I overcome, what will be my rewards? If you do not yield but escape through the emergency exit, you can show a thumbs up! May such moments of victory abound in your life.
Lack of self-control can damage a woman’s life. “Like a city whose walls are broken through, is a person who lacks self-control” (Prov 25:28). It is predicted that in the last days women would be without self-control (2 Tim 3:3). Don’t we see this fact everyday? The newspaper describes us the last day scenes. So let us add self-control to our knowledge (2 Pet 1:6). Practice self-control.
