I am an Owl !
Reading: Esther 6:1-14
“God grants sleep to those He loves” (Psa 127:2b)
Many women toss and turn in bed, quoting the above promise in vain. Notice that the preceding sentences speak of building a house, labour, watching and guarding and rising up early. So it goes without saying that we need to do certain things to get nocturnal sleep —
1. Get up early. Early risers sleep well because they become tired by night fall. Set the alarm 5 minutes earlier to your waking time and gradually lower it till you become sleepy by night.
2. Avoid daytime nap. After lunch you feel sleepy. A short nap refreshes you. But if you are an owl then you need to hack it off your schedule. When you feel sleepy, get up and do something you like. Check your email, watch TV or go through some new recipes. Ward off that hour profitably. You will not only feel refreshed, your drooping eyelids will be wide apart.
3. Cut down your coffee and tea. These are stimulants that can keep you awake. If you are addicted to them, gradually reduce. You can take some other drink instead. Some fizzy drinks contain caffeine. So check the label before you down them.
4. Increase your exercise. Be brisk during daytime. Cut down your TV time and increase your evening walk. Especially sedentary workers must take up some household chore, aerobics, bicycling or an outdoor vigorous game.
5. Check your medicines. Some drugs can keep you awake. Consult your doctor and ask for an alternative.
6. Relax. When you lie down in bed, breathe deeply, casting all your cares on God. Trust Him to take care of all the problems in your life. Keep praising Him till you fall asleep.
7. Your smartphone can keep you awake. Leave it in the next room or switch it off.
8. Watch what you ingest. Eat early. Avoid going to bed immediately after dinner. A heavy night meal can cause stomach acid to rise into your oesophagus (food pipe) and cause heartburn.
9. An exhaust fan in the bedroom can keep you cool.
10. Keep the bedroom mosquito free. See if there are any other factors that hinder your sleep and solve the problem.
If you still don’t get sleep, don’t worry. Use the time. The next day you will sleep soundly. If you follow these disciplines, you will become His beloved, and He will certainly give you sound sleep!
