What Sarah said displeased Abraham. But God told him to take it easy. “Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned,” said God (vv11,12). Romans 9:7-9 proves that Sarah was right. Sarah received a revelation that Abraham did not. She spoke up though it hurt her husband. She did not keep quiet in the name of submission.
Achan hid a Babylonian shawl, silver and gold inside his tent. Did he dig the ground without his wife’s knowledge? May be she helped in the digging too. If she had spoken up boldly and put her foot down on his sin, she would have saved her family and preven- ted a national calamity. Israel would have captured Ai without loss of lives and celebrated a victory bringing glory to God’s name.
Bold words are not proud words. When women speak up, they must speak boldly with all humility to their husbands and others. They must be gentle, quiet and bold. They must be submissive and obedient; but when they sense danger, they must stand tall and protect their families from destruction. Your husband may feel sad; but a time will come when he will rejoice for your bold stand that saved the family. God speaks to women as much as to men. Be sensitive to God’s Spirit and take prayerful decisions.
Young girls need godly boldness. You need the guidance of your parents. At the same time you need to obey them “in the Lord” (Eph 6:1). The Bible adds, “for this is right.” Many young girls are forced to do wrong things like marrying the wrong person or worship idols. ‘God first’ must be your dictum. Remember, the Bible also admonishes you to honour your parents. So speak with respect when you express your view and never hesitate to consult your spiritual leaders.
Many youths of the Bible were teenagers when they took a stand for God. Remember that! If virgin Mary had told the angel, “I need to ask my parents before giving word,” do you think the angel would have appreciated her? The very fact that God sent an angel to Mary with a vital message shows God expects godly teenagers to take bold decisions and face the consequences. Women must not be cry babies. They must learn to be bold for God.
