“While Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him saying, ‘Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him’ ” (Mt 27:19)
While Eve was the cause for her husband’s sin, here we find a woman preventing her husband from sinning. She had a sleepless night as God was speaking to her. Word had spread that Jesus was caught and faced judgment. It was early morning and her husband had left home to deal with an emergency case (Jn 18:28). She did not tarry with the news till he returned home. What if her husband sinned by judging Jesus? So she urgently sent the message (Mt 27:18). See how her words influenced Pilate. She wrote, “Just Man” and Pilate said, “Just Man.” Pilate took his wife’s counsel and washed his hands off. The people took the blood- guilt on themselves. He was saved by his wife.
Women can be a source of temptation or salvation. Like Pilate’s wife you can apply the brakes when someone is about to fall in sin. Pilate was known to be a wicked man (Lk 13:1); Yet he gave heed to his wife’s words. Women must be a source of good influence in the family and outside. We can influence the children too in a positive way by our words.
If God urges you to speak to someone and counsel her, do not hesitate. Pray and try to dissuade her from sin. Leave the consequences to God. In the family you may be the one to bring peace between your family members and your husband’s. In the workplace you may find your coworkers flirting, lying, cheating or taking bribes. Be bold to speak gently.
Young girls have a good circle of friends. Nowadays youth are led astray by many evil forces. But you are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Do not be a mute witness to evil. You can influence your friends for good; even your parents and others.
Listen to James’ concluding statement in his epistle: “My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins” (Js 5:19,20).
Take the risk of offending that you may save a soul from eternal death!
