“Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5)
The scene was the wedding house at Cana. Mary, probably a widow by then, was there to attend the wedding of one who might have been her relative. She did not draw a chair and seat herself, as we would do, waiting for the next thing to happen. She was intimately involved in the wedding affairs and knew they were running short of wine.
She put in a word with Jesus. Did she expect Jesus to perform a miracle? I don’t think so, because she had never seen Him perform one. That was the first miracle He did. But she knew her Son was a problem-solver at home, being the eldest Son. She probably expected Him to make some quick arrangement to get the wine. She could command the servants. She was a respectable figure there, though a carpenter’s wife. She rose to that position by her piety and helpful nature. Even though her Son’s words were not too encouraging, she did not give up, as she knew Him.
Jesus must have laughed within Himself at His mother’s persistence. Now it was His turn to act. When the best wine was served, the proudest person was Mary! She was a link. She was a catalyst. When people couldn’t find the answers she was there to give the solution. Do what Jesus tells you to do and that is the end of your problems.
We all can act as catalysts instead of being idle observers in a problem. Like Mary we need to involve ourselves in the tight situations of people and unravel their knots. She knew the solution. They were not looking to Jesus for their solution, but she pointed them to Him.
The situation may appear dim, with no assurance from God. But your positive word can work a miracle. When the Egyptian princess stood in the Nile river with the Hebrew baby in her hands, not knowing what to do nex t, Miri am stepped i n with her suggestion for a wet nurse and set the ball rolling. She quickly brought in the baby’s mother and thus the stage was set for the deliverance of Israel.
Everybody needs a kick. Don’t hesitate to give the kick!
