“Why should you die before your time?” (Eccl 7:17)
There are many reasons to die early and one is overwork. I find many women killing themselves by taking up more than what they can effectively do. I met a young mother leaving her child with her mother-in-law, leaving home at 7 am and returning at 8 pm. She was taking treatment for Vitamin D. deficiency because of the long hours spent in air-conditioned room. She was unable to leave the job because no other job would pay her so much.
In the Bible too we find many working women like Lydia. They were shepherdesses, leaders, servants in palaces and a variety of other jobs. But before taking up a job consider the following —
1. Do I really need the extra money?
2. Am I healthy enough to take care of
my home responsibilities and a job?
3. Is my time with God affected?
4. Do I need the job for a hearty self-image?
5. Will I be better off if I quit the job?
6. Can I manage without my income?
7. Is my physical, mental and emotional health
affected in any way?
8. Are my children, husband and home affected in any way?
Consider also the positive side —
You will be more relaxed to have a family life, bear children, feed them and bring them up in the fear of God. Children will be physically and emotionally healthy.
You will be left with sufficient time to read your Bible and pray. You can also have a Bible Study at home and join an outreach programme or teach a Sunday Class. You can do some ministry for God. You can teach some poor children.
My daughter was a baby when I worked in the Government Hospital. I resigned my job because it was very stressful. Till today I have not regretted the decision. May be you can pray and think about it. The Lord will guide you.
If you are in a joint family or you are a widow, if your husband’s income in insufficient to meet your basic needs or if there is any other valid reason, you may surely look for a job.
