“Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you;
blessed are you among women!” (Lk 1:28)
Mary was probably fifteen or sixteen years old I guess, when the angel Gabriel visited her. The encouraging word she received from him was that she was a highly favoured girl. How wonderful! There were so many girls in Israel, but Mary was chosen for God’s favour. What made her favourable in God’s eyes?
She kept herself pure during her teen years. When Joseph heard of Mary’s pregnancy, he planned to put her away secretly. That means, it was not uncommon for a teenager to become pregnant out of wedlock in those days.
How did her parents allow her to travel from Galilee to Judea to her aunty’s house for three months? She was so trustworthy. Probably her parents were able to believe her supernatural pregnancy because of her unspotted character. It was her inner beauty that was a scoring point in God’s eyes.
Youth are experiencing a sexual revolution in the 21st century. Mingling with the opposite sex and going out together is not looked down upon as before. Girls are pressurised to have boy friends. Do you think Mary did not find opportunities to go astray? Temptation was all around her. But she kept her purity. Jesus taught us to pray, “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” This should become the daily prayer of every young girl. Learn to recognize temptation in all its garbs. It can come as an innocent relationship or a helpful friend. Keep your emotions under constant check. It is very easy to give in to the temptation of physical experiences culminating in sex. So, even now make a strong decision never to have sex before marriage even if you plan to marry that person. Sexual experience is the privilege of the married. The Bible calls sex outside marriage as sin (1 Cor 6:18). This concept is going out of fashion. But the Bible is never outdated. Today you may feel sorry you are not able to be like your friends. But tomorrow you will rejoice that you saved your life from a great disaster.
“If you wait until the moment of temptation to decide how you will handle it, it’s too late. You’ve already lost the battle, because you have not prepared your will to override your feelings.”
