“Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things” (Lk 10:41)
Worried ... troubled ... many things! Nowadays Jesus can say this to any woman. “Dying of stress” is not hyperbole any more. Headache and migraine are becoming common. Every woman wants to achieve something to her credit and so she does Ph.D, takes up a job and juggles other things too. Marriage, husband, children and home are by the way. As if this is not enough to give her a throbbing headache — a child becomes sick, the teacher of her child wants to meet her, there is a problem with her husband and in-laws, etc., etc., etc. Some practical tips to ease your mind —
Stress speaks on your health. Martha was going in for a nervous breakdown. Instead of asking Mary to go and help, Jesus tried to help Martha correct herself. What could Martha have done? She could have reduced the number of dishes and had a plan to clean up the kitchen before Jesus arrived. Then she could have joined Mary for a calm time at Jesus’ feet. If you are stressed out, try the following —
1. Avoid the ‘much serving.’ Cut out a few from your ‘to do’ list or put it off for a later date. Working yourself to a frazzle will surely hurt you.
2. Relax. Lie down and close your eyes and dream. Or open up a pomegranate and eat one seed after the other. Or sit in the porch and sip a cup of hot coffee watching the mad world go by. It is time to switch off our mobiles and switch on our lives.
3. Perfectionists go mad at anything. Pooh-pooh perfection and be happy with whatever you have done. Appreciate yourself.
4. Be organized. Plan your cooking the previous night and write it down in your diary. Write your shopping list for the morning. Writing your diary takes five minutes in the night and goes a long way in keeping you relaxed. I am fond of reading jokes. I laugh aloud at any good joke and write it down in the white board hung in our hall. My family laughs. We all laugh. The atmosphere becomes light and relaxing. So joke and laugh with family and friends. Give your poor over-stretched body and mind a chance to unwind. As the saying goes, “Let go and let God.”
