Reading: Ecclesiastes 7:26-29
“I found one upright man among a thousand,
but not one upright woman among them all” (Eccl 7:28)
Eve the first woman knew God’s command very well. When the snake tempted her, Adam was also with her (Gen 3:6). He was not convinced about the serpent’s argument. Eve was the first to take the risk of violating God’s order. Then she talked to Adam and convinced him and encouraged him to eat the fruit. We know Eve talked, because God said to Adam, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife” (9:17).
What terrible words to make somebody fall in sin! Adam’s charge was, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me” (v12). The God-given woman became the trap for the man. How careful we have to be with our words! We can either save people or destroy them with our words. We should never speak words that will draw others to sin. Solomon’s wives “led him astray” (1 Ki 11:3,4). Adam, Ahab and Solomon were walking straight. But their wives talked them into straying from God.
Many young girls talk their friends into sin by suggesting boy friends, disobedience to parents, drugs, drinks, night clubs, internet sins and lying. The tongue can lead one to eternal life or eternal doom. We can be a source of blessing to people or bring curse on them. Learn to speak words that will help people walk the right path, words of edification.
“They mouth empty, boastful words, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh; they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error” (2 Pet 2:18). We should not be the cause of the downfall of anyone. Never encourage anyone to sin. “If anyone causes one of these little ones — those who believe in Me — to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea” (Mt 18:6).
May be Solomon could not find one upright among his 1000 wives. But you can be the 1001st woman. It may be a small negative suggestion like, “Be careful with that lady” or “Be strict with your daughter-in-law from the beginning itself or she will sit on your head.” It can cause a lot of damage to the concerned. We put wrong ideas about people in other’s minds that grow as poison ivies and damage relationships.
