Reading: Philippians 4:4-7
“Oil of joy for mourning,
the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness” (Isa 61:3)
Young girls mourn their poor grades, or that job opportunities are rare or their marriage doesn’t seem to materialize. Many weep because they are ditched or because they went astray and are reaping the fruits. Married women have their share of sorrows. Well, life has no guarantees but life is what we make out of it.
First we must understand that to be weeping or singing is in our hands. We should not let circumstances rule us. Circumstances can be wicked and kill our spirit; but we must rise above them. Make a decision that you are not going to let the events of your life depress you and make a positive decision to be happy. Happiness is a choice and you must choose to be happy. There is no hard-and-fast rule to be happy. Some rough guidelines —
Have a positive outlook on life. If you receive criticism or meet with failure, instead of sulking you can find a way to improve yourself where you failed. That will keep you busy, make you forget your sorrow and ultimately improve yourself and make you happy.
Everybody is vulnerable in the family because we all want to give love and accept love. When we get hurt in the process, the solution is not to move away from the one who hurt you (sibling, child or husband) but move closer by trying to understand and showering more love on them. That saves us from going into depression and helps us climb the heights of happiness.
Having a friend who can pray and be supportive will make us less anxious in a stressful situation. Lonely people tend to be unhappy.
Keep yourself busy. Work, either inside the home or outside, boosts your spirit. Laziness causes a severe dip in happiness. Pursue a hobby and enjoy what you do.
Finally, “Rejoice in the Lord always.” How? Like Hannah, “Don’t be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:4,6,7).
Remove “if” from your vocabulary. Be happy with whatever you have and whatever you are. That’s the way to be happy and singing all the way through life.
