Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:7-11
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Rom 12:18)
Then Rachel said, “With great wrestling I have wrestled with my sister, and indeed I have prevailed” (Gen 30:8). This verse is a window to the relationship between her and Leah. There was constant wrestling between the two because of the partiality shown by Jacob (Gen 29:30), The constant harping by Leah that she was God’s pet (vv31-35), jealousy and frustration (30:1), husband’s anger (v2), the competition (v9), the verbal matches (vv14,15), vying for love (v16), etc. made a war-torn family and their lives were too entangled to unravel.
School girls wrestle with classmates over grades. This leads to jealousy. School or College girls can end up hating one another if they happen to fall in love with the same boy. Wives quarrel with husbands over everything. Quarrel between neighbours is everyday affair. What can we do to avoid such conflicts and get along with each other?
The best approach to any situation in life that can lead to a quarrel is to give up (1 Cor 6:7). We learn this principle from Abraham who gave the right of choice to Lot voluntarily. Lot chose the better side, when constant quarrels tore apart the family fabric. But the funny thing is that God laughed at Lot and said to Abraham “after” Lot had parted, that the land that Lot chose would also be given to Abraham’s family (Gen 13:14-17). “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Mt 5:5).
We don’t lose anything by giving up; we only gain. If you want peace of mind then after you have given up, forgive the one who quarrelled with you. Bless them and help them in whatever way you can. “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone” (Col 3:13). Euodia and Syntyche wo uld ha v e fa red well if they had f ollowed this principle (Phil 4:2). Note, both were serving the Lord and their names were in the Book of Life.
Our model and leader Jesus Christ refused to quarrel with His opposers though angry (Isa 42:2; Mk 3:5). He never shouted or raised His voice in argument. Let us learn to lie low.
