Reading: Acts 5:1-10
“For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Phil 1:21)
A hard lesson we learn late: We are not ready to meet death.
“At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband” (Acts 5:10). We all know we will die some day, but we don’t believe it may be any day. We put off the thought of death for a far away day. Poor Sapphira. Probably she put on her best dress to meet Peter and receive his appreciation for their grand donation. She never had an inkling that she’d never, never return to enjoy “part of the money.” Death snatched her away from her prized possessions without giving her time to get ready.
Beware, ladies! How sad that most of us live as if we are going to live on this earth forever. We earn, we buy, we sell, we hoard and spend our life counting our money and assets. All your toil on this earth for worldly wealth is a chasing after the wind. A woman who toils must leave all she owns to another (Eccl 1:14; 2:21). A rich man stored and stored for his future; but sadly he had no future. God demanded his life that very night (Lk 12:16-21).
Let us take our eyes off this world and keep them on eternity. Set your heart and mind on things above, not on earthly things (Col 3:1,2). Life is not what you earn or what you save. You must be rich toward God. You carry on as usual enjoying life until you are hit by the news that your end is near. Your business deals come to a standstill and you start thinking about whether you will go to hell or heaven.
Why wait for the day when death is inevitable? What if death comes unannounced? Change your perspective today. Labour for that which shall not be taken away from you. Live for God, give for God and work for God. Like Paul we must be able to say, “For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Phil 1:21). Why was death gain to him? Because all his riches were up in heaven. How did he manage to get so much riches in heaven? Because for him life meant living for Christ.
When we open our eyes in heaven we must not say, “I wish I
had lived for Christ,” but, “Praise God I lived a fool for Christ!”
