Reading: Isaiah 49:13-16
“Immanuel which means, ‘God with us’ ” (Mt 1:23)
God is always with us, is a lesson usually learnt late. “They asked her, ‘Woman, why are you crying?’ ‘They have taken away my Lord,’ she said, ‘and I don’t know where they have put Him’ ” (Jn 20:13). All our life we keep crying: “Where is God? He is not hearing my pleas. He doesn’t care for me. He has left me to suffer alone.” And in the end we discover that God is where He should be
— Near me, Immanuel — sleeping in the lower room of my life boat. Naomi was one such woman, who said, “I went away full but the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me” (Ruth 1:21). She was not able to see the larger picture.
God is painting a picture of our life. His brush slashes black in many areas so that the colours will stand out. If we do not under- stand this early in life, we will go into depression. Mary Magdalene thought her Saviour had left her and gone forever. No, He was there asking her why she was weeping. He consoled her. Dis- couraging events happen in our life and ministry. But God’s Word emphatically says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:6,7).
The Bible does not promise us deliverance from all troubles. But it promises the peace incomprehensible. God carries us in His arms when we walk through fire. Our Lord Jesus did not become a Man to give us a wonderful, pain-free, pleasure-filled life. He came to mould us, purify us through the furnace experience that we may become pure gold, fit to enter heaven. Sarah suffered, Ruth suffered, Esther suffered, even Mary the mother of Jesus suffered. Who did not suffer? So take heart. Face every trial courageously. God says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say, “The Lord is my Helper; I will not fear” (Heb 13:5,6).
I look back at my own life, and testify that none of the things that I suffered were fruitless. God turned everything for good.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Mt 5:4).
